Abstract

The involvement of the kiai in politics in the New Order era was very different, such as through several policies, one of them was in the late 1980s, the Suharto's political administration through an approach with Muslims. so that it is supported through policies that codify the most prominent Muslims, namely the formation of ICMI (Indonesian Muslim Intellectual Association) as concrete evidence of the success of bureaucratic moderation by Muslims. In the era of political reforms that had affiliations with Muslims began to emerge in the 1955 general elections. Like Masumi, Nahdlatul Ulama, and PSII. Besides that, the existence of kiai in the political realm of pesantren becomes important as an interaction process between NU, Pesantren Kiai and the attitude of NU members who are not separated to fight for the welfare of the people through the socio-religious, education, community and political development. however, in recent times figures and kahrismatik kiai have been used by elites to seek the voice of the people down to the bottom, through political safari activities carried out by party elites to kiai who have strong masses.
